Cait & Ridiculously Photogenic Mike

"It was so funny to look through the pictures and see us trying to keep a straight face", writes Caitlin after browsing her gallery. This is just a small insight into how much fun these guys are. They are really fun-loving people to the core, and instantly dismissed any insecurities with laughter. You would never be able to tell that half of the time, they were stifling a grin.

I guess it doesn't count as breaking in if the gate is unlocked, and swings open when you 'bump' it.

These Doylestown colors were the perfect backdrop- the perfect reflection of Cait & Mike's personalities.

Please...if I could take this wall home...

Look at the expression on Mike- one of the most photogenic, born-for-the-camera people I've photographed. No prompting, no posing, no requests...I just got great facial expressions every time!

Eva & Dave

Dave & Eva...so obviously, hopelessly taken by eachother that it awakens the hopeless romantic in me! They were hooked up by friends of theirs, and there was an instant connection. I asked Eva when she knew Dave was the one for her, and without hesitation, she and Dave simultaneously said "we knew". As in, right from the beginning. The best way I can describe their relationship is "timeless". I could tell in the little things Dave did for Eva that he is so completely captivated by her. He always put her first, went out of his way to make her feel comfortable, and through the lens, I caught tons of loving gazes that he threw her way. He watches her like he's mesmerized by her every feature. In contrast, you would expect Eva's independent, confident personality to dominate the relationship. Instead, she lets Dave's love and protection surround her, enabling him to be every bit of man every woman should have. Dave, Eva, it was a pleasure getting to know you both. Watching the two of you interact was such a blessing to my often stifled hopeless romantic heart. I'm confident your relationship will stand the test of time!

The shoot started off a little awkward- like most do- but by the end, they were open to possibility. They were laughing so hard at the absurdity of the situation that I had to force them to make serious faces.

Rebecca & Richard

I had the pleasure of working with both Rebecca and Richard a few years back, and what I remember from them during that time in their lives-- when they were still single-- was that they were both admired by everyone around them. They are both good-natured, easy to talk to, upstanding people, and while the news of their engagement shocked me, it also immediately thrilled me: these two are such a sensible match! Since I didn't get to interact with Rebecca and Richard while they were a couple, I was anxious for the wedding day. That's what I like most about my job...seeing the way a couple loves each other, and translating that into photographic art. They awakened the hopeless romantic in me. Rebecca and Richard love with a quiet respect and a tenderness that is beyond the reach of words.

Rebecca and Richard, I wish you all the happiness this life can offer! May your marriage thrive and always be filled with the beauty I saw on your wedding day.

Erin & Clint Hummel

Erin and I met for the first time over a year ago. She's the type of girl you feel like you've known forever, regardless of whether it's been five minutes or ten. We were grabbing a coffee to discuss the big day--which almost always turns into excited girl talk and yields the occasional squeal. Erin was waiting for Clint to arrive, and when he walked through the door, the girl LIT UP and turned three different-yet flattering-shades of pink!! I fake-punched her arm and whispered "You're blushing! Is this love still new!?" She nods, a huge grin spreading across her face. Early on, Erin & Clint just knew they had found forever in each other. Getting to know them was such a REFRESHING experience...it's good for the soul to be around such a ripe, innocent love! It's almost contagious. Their wedding day was trimmed with charm and nostalgia. I guarantee the friends and loved ones who gathered to celebrate with Clint and Erin took a piece of that fresh, contagious love home with them, and felt bettered by it.

Adria & Jim's Engagement Session

Every time I shoot I'm reminded how much I love my job, and how blessed I am that people trust me to interpret and translate their personalities and their love for each other into a piece of art. I love getting to know my couples and their style...it broadens my horizons as an artist, and they enrich my life, in general. The plan for Jim and Adria was to capture a few frames and then walk to the Art Museum, where we would hopefully capture a few more. The traffic in the city was crazy that day, and the sunshine high in the clear sky, so we figured we might as well take advantage of the day! The walk provided us with more photo opps than driving from A to B ever could have. We had a great day diverting from their comfort zones a bit and just letting loose. Jim and Adria were great! Very much in love...naturals in front of the camera. The wedding is in August 2010 so family, friends, I hope this holds you over until then!

The Wedding Journey of Jenn Wiker: The Bridal Shower

I had the honor of capturing a pre-engagement shoot, an engagement shoot, and now the bridal shower, as the "Wiker Wedding Journey" continues. This is the most creative group of girls I've worked with yet! Every little detail was thought of!!! This was the table at the entryway. Jenn's colors are black and green, with a damask theme.

The girls made Jenn a special gift: a wine rack with various wines-- some that they have already had on special occasions, and some to use for future special occasions!

The girls were proud because it made her cry. :)

Custom-designed menus on pearl paper, and green napkins gave the tables added flair.

Even the favor boxes had their own custom labels.

It was a good surprise- she had no idea. As you'll see below (after this pic), Jenn-- who is the most organized person ever-- bought her own shower outfit and gave it to Tiff (Maid of Honor) to bring to her shower..."whenever it is". So after the surprise, there was a wardrobe change.

There were some thoughtful toasts, and good food. Good times had by all! Then came the gifts. Some of them were just as creative as the shower details.

They made my "pre-wedding-shop-therapy-and-registry-completer" gift card look bad.

Last but not least, here are the minds behind the magic. Props ladies!

What to Wear for a Portrait Session

It's the staple of the pre-shoot phonecall: "so what should we wear?" But I never tire of hearing it...or answering it! My brides-to-be are going to be showcasing their engagement pictures on save-the-dates or in guest books, and they want to make it count! So, what should you wear? The only standard I want to set here is that I want the pictures to be so completely and totally {insert your name here} that it brings a smile to your friends' faces when they see your hands-down-favorite one. So here are some things to think on while you stand in front of your closet:

1. Play up your personal style.
If you are trendy, go someplace inexpensive, like Forever 21, and grab something fun and new that makes you feel like a million bucks. If you are classic, don't just wear jeans and a t-shirt (unles you are DYING to)...wear your layers, have fun with your colors. Look like you just peeled yourself off of the GAP catalog page. If you are like my friend, Sam, who can go to a thrift store and come out with an self-created vintagy outfit that re-invents style altogether but makes others envious (and all for ten dollars), put that talent to work! If you like theatre or acting, now is the best time EVER to play dress up! Your photo shoot is your stage! I can't recommend specifics in this situation, but if acting is you, I'm sure you have more than enough creativity to build something brilliant.
2. COLOR!!
Most photographers say to dress in neutral tones, but let's face it, it can be SO BORING. There is nothing that a red hat or paisley tie can't liven up! One of my recent brides decided to wear green for the engagement shoot (in the previouspost) to introduct her wedding day color choice in her save-the-dates! I will admit, if one of you is wearing a pattern, it's best to keep the other in a solid (or solids, if you're layering) or a more subtle pattern. Unless ofcourse two crazy patterns is the look you want to go for.
3. Formal, anyone?
Everyone just assumes since they will be in a floor-length gown the next time we meet, that the engagement shoot should be casual. No way! If you want to dress to the 9's, I'm all about it. Especially if it's a dress you can have fun in-- get wet, get dirty, climb into high places, or wear in formal gown-unfriendly places to get an interesting picture. Nothing catches attention like diverting from the norm.

4. Shoes Show!
All my girls out there who are members of www.shoedazzle.com, pick out the best pair they've sent you yet, and you'd better believe we will work them in to whatever pictures we can! Being a shoe lover, I'm notorious for trying to sneak in feet shots. Bare feet are fine too.

5. BRING PROPS!!!!
Seriously, if you have ANYTHING that could be remotely interesting, that is special to you, or that would nicely trademark your images, throw it in the trunk. Or the Uhaul. I had a bride ask me, the other day, if we could plop a couch in the middle of a field for her shoot! I LOVE this kind of creativity! If you want to bring furniture, I'm in. If you have a cute, lace or polka-dot umbrella...a pet...a hat...costume jewelery...anything! The more the merrier!

6. What about the guys?
Usually we women take over right away and just tell them what they need to do. Let's give them the benefit of the doubt, shall we? Tell him what you plan to wear, and tell him to pick out his favorite outfit that he thinks could compliment yours. Even if the style is completely different than yours: for example, vintage+preppy, trendy+athletic, etc. If you completely hate it, pick something out that you like to bring along for him to change into, after we shoot some of him in the outfit he picked out all by himself. You will be able to dress him for the rest of your marriage...it's only fair. And the more comfortable he feels during the shoot, the better pictures you'll get!

The more creative you get, the more creative I can get in my photographic interpretation of your personality. And through all this, I'll get to know you both better, which will make working together on the wedding day that much more fun!

Weekend Madness!

This past weekend I had two shoots: My brothers-in-law, and my nephews and Noah (my son). Pictures are the best thing to give in-laws for Christmas! We all crammed into my Altima and went to Brynn Athen cathedral. It's an awesome place for pictures-- the architecture is stunning! Here are a few of my favorites from the shoot:
After that session, we crammed BACK into the Altima and drove to a nearby playground for the younger boys' shoot. It was hard to get the twins grounded to one spot for more than a few seconds, but we did manage. Here are some of my favs from that:

Long Branch Where?

This Summer I was the second shooter for my friend Mike. The wedding was in Long Branch, NJ. When he said "beach wedding" I was thinking of the Jersey Shore...you know...the common places: Ocean City, Sea Isle City, Wildwood. I had no idea it even existed! The resort/spa was pretty, and there was a promenade of sorts, mimicking a boardwalk along the beach. Unfortunately, it was rainy, so the ceremony had to be held indoors, and the pictures were taken under cover, but Mike and Sherry were still elated for their big day. She was a beautiful bride, and he an endearing groom.

The Pumpkin Patch Experience

We took Noah to a pumpkin Patch this weekend with some friends of ours: Derek, Leslie, and their little boy Braeden. Fall is the perfect time for family portraits outdoors! The changing leaves, pumpkins, mums...they all provide beautiful backdrops. These are great portraits to add to your Christmas greeting cards, too! It's refreshing to see a different season when you feel like the cold will never end.

Jon & Donna are Finally Married!

After an engagement just before summer, our friends Jon and Donna tied the knot. They were married in Sea Isle City, NJ. The bride arrived to the 'alter'/dock by boat, and they were married at sunset. They couldn't have asked for a more beautiful sky....also a backlighting nightmare! Well worth it, though. How romantic!

Last Weekend

Our son Noah was dedicated this past weekend (similar to a Christening). We were supposed to have the party outdoors but the sky opened up and the whole weekend was rain! We did manage to snag a few outdoor family pictures prior to the start of it, though. My friend Mike was kind enough to be the photographer for the day.

In spite of the weather, everything went well! Fun was had by all.

This was such a fun wedding to do...Rebekah and Matt are a vivacious, fun-loving couple, and it showed through every aspect of their wedding day. She was a beautiful bride...he was the most "together" groom I'd ever seen (cool as a cucumber!, no nerves!), and the reception was so much fun, even to shoot! I have a picture of Ashley (my assistant) teaching the girls the Cupid Shuffle, below. I seldom take pictures with my clients, but Joe (second shooter) was there when we were saying our goodbyes and we couldn't resist. Fun was had by all. Congratulations Rebekah and Matt!!!

Essential Wedding Photography Shots

Making a list of desired photographs for your photographer can be stressful...you don't want to miss anything crucial, but on the other hand, you don't want to overdo it. A common misconception is that if you provide your photographer with a list of shots you want, you won't get any candids. This is not the case. At the end of the day, when you sit down a few months after the wedding to make your albums and place a print order, you'll be thankful that you have a few decent family pictures to blow up and frame as gifts. If you are worried about not capturing candid shots, just make sure your photographer is booked for an hour or two longer than you think you may need them. Another good idea is to ask your photographer to provide a second shooter, who can take candids while your formals are being shot. Here is a list to stick by. Remember, you may need to appoint someone who knows the family to assist the photographer with gathering the right people for your formals.

Your Best Wedding Makeup

Hi Philadelphia Brides-to-be! Today's topic: bridal makeup. Cosmetic editing is all the rage in photography today. With Adobe Photoshop, anything is possible! Brides rely on photographers to bring out their inner supermodel with editing, which can get costly! You can save yourself money, and save your photographer time, by focusing a bit more time on some of these key editing areas:

Foundation

While researching bridal makeup, you will constantly hear that less is more. This is SO TRUE in the editing world! When testing foundations, choose something sheer and light. This will have the tendency to allow your natural skin color to show through, and thus blend better with the makeup, creating a flawless-but-natural finish that will minimize the need for color adjustments. A good way to see what your foundation will look like is to stand outside in the bright sunlight and have someone snap a picture. If your foundation looks good here, you can guarantee it will look good in any light. One example of a foundation that is light but still provides sufficient coverage is Bare Essentials Mineral Foundation. You can find it at any Ulta, and if it's not during a holiday season, an Ulta makeup artist will do your makeup as a trial for free! If you do get Bare Essentials, DO NOT SKIP THE PRIMER. This is the part that takes the makeup from being a sheer powder and gives it staying power.

Blemishes

If you have a zit, please, please, please cover it up. Don't overdo it, and make it look like a mound of dried makeup caked to your face, but do dab a bit of concealer or powder onto it to minimize the redness.

Eyes

One of the biggest parts of cosmetic editing is in the eye area. Changing someone's eyes can make such dramatic differences that it's worth it to take extra care in applying your makeup. If you aren't using an eye cream, start now. The skin around your eyes is very tender and prone to aging if you don't handle it with care. This scares some brides away from using makeup under their eyes at all, but remember, if you do it in moderation, and careful application, you can create a flawless wedding day look while preserving your skin. When applying makeup, don't pull or rub under your eyes. Simply dab makeup in desired areas to cover your circles. Do not use a powder under your eyes unless you use it very sparingly. Powder can cake on and cause the area to appear dryer, emphasizing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Cream-based cover up is best. Be sure to find one which doesn't gather in your creases. Revlon Colorstay Cover up is a good choice.

An eye area most brides to not think about is the inner portion, right beside your nose. Apply cover up here, as well, to eliminate any darkness. This will take five years off of your face!!

A common eye makeup trick is to sweep a shimmery white shadow under the brow line to draw the attention upwards, and brighten your eyes.

Teeth

White teeth make a huge difference in your wedding pictures! If you have tried Crest Whitening Strips, and they don't work, ask your dentist if they provide the Professional Strength. It isn't as costly or time consuming as professional whitening, but for 50 dollars, you get a bright white smile in a matter of weeks! When choosing lipstick for the big day, try to stick with blue undertones. Yellow undertones make the teeth appear yellow-- sometimes even if they are not!

Lips

Gloss, gloss, gloss!!! Don't slop on so much that you can't seal the deal and greet your guests without leaving your mark, but do give some to your Maid of Honor to keep handy for portrait time. Dab a little onto the middle of your lips, to create the illusion of shine. If your lips are dry, don't hesitate to use chapstick, and then a little bit of gloss on the center.

Hair

So many brides get trapped in the curls-are-us net: curls loaded with hairspray and fresh off the iron. If you want to go for a natural, feminine look, make sure your stylist pulls the curls apart, to loosen them up a bit. There is nothing wrong with using hairspray, but it's best used once the style you desire is created...not before. Soft, feminine curls or waves are beautiful...even magical...on any bride!

Small, simple tricks like these take less time, but you'll get a great look, both on camera and off.
